Spotlight on the SCGS Volunteer

Volunteer

The volunteers are the lifeblood of SCGS. If it weren't for our devoted cadre of librarians, indexers, back-room workers who keep the library and Society organized, there would be no Society. Please thank them for their efforts, and consider volunteering your time and talents toward the future of SCGS.

SPOTLIGHT ON VOLUNTEERS

Alice Avila

Alice Avila

Alice became addicted to genealogy in 1995. She decided to join the Society and become a library volunteer after venturing into the “old” SCGS library on San Fernando Road and meeting so many nice, helpful people. Over the years, she has served on the board of directors for various non-profit groups which gave her experience in fund-raising, working on committees, public relations and reaching out to the community.

Jamboree attendees will recognize Alice as the person directing traffic in the Convention Center. She has been a member of that committee for several years.

Lin LaRochelle

Lin LaRochelle
From Maine to Wall Street to Venice Beach, CA, Lin La Rochelle spent most of her working years as a Bank Auditor, responsible for analyzing, evaluating and documenting evidence. Recognizing these skills and talents, Lin’s sister-in-law convinced her to enter the arena of family research. During the past 12 years, Lin has made several interesting discoveries, not the least of which is the fact that her 6th great grandfather was an Indian interpreter in Canada who was captured by the British, and died in a Boston prison. Both sides of Lin’s family are of French heritage and each began with a different surname - Gautron became LaRochelle and her mother’s maiden name, St. Louis was originally Lalande. Lin has traced both her paternal and maternal lines from Maine through the Province of Quebec, then back to France in the 1600s. Through DNA testing, Lin connected with a cousin in Montreal and discovered that they are descended from two daughters of the same couple going back 400 years. A member the Jamboree Committee, and Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee, Lin may often be found organizing and attempting to streamline Library operations and processes. She has also been involved in updating and formatting many Society publications to ensure uniformity and served on the Board of Directors.
