Presented by the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) and co-sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) and the Genealogical Society of Hispanic America--Southern California (GSHA-SC) webinars are offered on the third Saturday of most months (except August and December). Whether you're a beginner or have been researching for years, this is a fantastic opportunity to tune-up your current research skills or learn something new about family history research. Hosted by LAPL genealogy librarian Julie Huffman, monthly programs feature experts, genealogists, and historians who delve into diverse topics ranging from historical border changes in Eastern Europe, Jewish genealogy, the LAPL's Chinese roots collection, searching for pre-1848 Mexican ancestors, and exploring the vast collections at the Huntington Library in nearby San Marino.
Following onsite presentations, workshop leader and SCGS education chair Charlotte Bocage conducts tours of the LAPL Genealogy Department and provides research assistance after the tour

Julie Huffman, Genealogy Librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library
Julie Huffman is the genealogy librarian at the Central Library of Los Angeles Public Library. Over the course of her career at LAPL, she has been a young adult, children’s, and adult reference librarian. Julie's MLIS is from UCLA and she has a Bachelor’s of Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. The Genealogy and Local History Collection at Central Library is one of the largest on the West Coast, numbering more than 45,000 volumes, including over 10,000 family histories. LAPL also has many city directories, local histories, database subscriptions, and unique indexes.

Introduction to Chinese Genealogies (Zupu) on My China Roots

This session will give an overview of the zupu available on the database and which regions/surnames they cover. My China Roots's Clotilde Yap will present the main sections of a typical zupu, and how to make sense of it if you only know limited Chinese. She will also be taking a closer look at a few of the more popular zupu books as case studies, demonstrating how to figure out if a zupu is relevant or not, how to locate your ancestor's name, and how to extract your lineage from a zupu.
