Kicking Off Member2Member with Genealogy Q&A Break-Out Sessions at December Meeting & Party

Editor's note: Thanks to board member Rocco Hindman for his input in this article!

We hope you join us at the SCGS Family Research Library in Burbank or online for the annual meeting, followed by a holiday potluck lunch (in-person only). In addition to homemade goodies and good company, we encourage you to stay for the introduction of our new program, Member2Member.

Introducing Member2Member

We've heard from many members and family researchers that they miss the personal connection of live conferences and events. In 2025, we hope to build engagement and communication among members and the genealogical community. In addition to hosting informative educational opportunities in 2025, SCGS will hold inclusive Member2Member events. On a smaller, more personal scale, we want to return to the relationship-building and informal interactions that occurred before the pandemic changed how we meet, socialize, and learn.

We Know You Have at Least One Burning Genealogical Question

If you plan to attend the meeting/party in person, please submit a family history question by December 14. We'll try to match you with an expert or someone who can answer your question or point you in the right direction. This is the idea behind Member2Member: SCGS is a diverse genealogical community, and members can help one another with their family history research.

Email questions to: scgs@scgsgenealogy.com In the subject line, please write: M2M Question

Attendees are encouraged to participate; a pre-submitted question won't be required. We want everyone to join in!

Sample Questions to Spark Ideas

Possible genealogical or family research questions might include:

  • I received my DNA test results. How do I determine my relationship to my “matches”?

  • My DNA Ethnicity Estimate is not what I expected. What does this mean?

  • I have a question about my application to the Daughters of the American Revolution.

  • Am I eligible for dual citizenship based on my immigrant ancestor?

  • I know my great-grandmother entered the U.S. through Ellis Island, but I can't find her ship manifest record.

  • I have a record in German script. Can someone help me understand it?

  • I have exhausted the online resources for my Maryland ancestor, but I still have not found much about him. Are there other resources you can recommend?

  • I have never created a family tree using computer software. What are my options, and how do I begin?

  • I took a Y-DNA test to learn more about my paternal ancestry, but my matches all have surnames different from mine. What does this mean?

  • I want to find church records for my ancestors, but I haven’t been able to find any collections online. Can you point me in another direction?

  • I have been considering upgrading to the new Ancestry Pro Tools. Can someone tell me more about it?

  • A member of my family was adopted and would like to identify the birth parent(s), but I do not have the expertise to do this research on my own. Can someone local help me with this?

  • I think I have reached a brick wall in researching my ancestor. Can someone help me brainstorm any resources or other avenues that I have not considered?

  • The latest Ancestry results show that my ancestors are Italian Swiss. This is news: I knew my grandfather was half-Swiss but knew nothing about an Italian connection. How do I pursue this or was the update possibly an error?
