Peggy Lauritzen Presents 'The Ship Brooklyn and the Settling of San Francisco Bay' at SCGS's Genealogy Jam

Genealogist Peggy Clemens Lauritzen will present "The Ship Brooklyn and the Settling of San Francisco Bay" on Saturday, October 12, at 2:45 p.m. during the Southern California Genealogical Genealogical Society's (SCGS) upcoming conference, Genealogy Jam. The fall Jamboree's theme is Discovering Your Southwest Heritage.

The Voyage of the Brooklyn Saints

You may have heard about the Brooklyn Saints from the 2021 Netflix docuseries We Are the Brooklyn Saints, about a youth football program. The original Brooklyn Saints were a group of Latter-Day Saints who headed West to escape religious persecution. In July 1846, Mormon pioneers aboard the ship Brooklyn arrived in San Francisco Bay after sailing for six months and 24,000 miles from the port of New York City.

In a fascinating presentation, genealogist Peggy Clemens Lauritzen shares the voyage of the Brooklyn, which rounded Cape Horn and stopped at the Juan Fernandez Islands off the coast of Chile, then Honolulu. You'll learn that this was no pleasure cruise. The Brooklyn's crew and 238 passengers endured storms, enormous physical hardships, and financial losses. Though their goal was to eventually migrate to Salt Lake City to find religious freedom, the passengers on this voyage were among the first farmers, educators, builders, legislators, and newspaper publishers to arrive in California. Many Brooklyn passengers made significant contributions to California's commerce, industry, and agriculture. The ship's journey would

be one of the longest religious voyages in history.
