SCGS's French-Canadian Heritage Society Shares Family Recipes, Plans Ancestor Cookbook

For years, SCGS's special-interest group, the French-Canadian Heritage Society, has held a potluck lunch during its October meetings. Group leader Suzy Goulet said they decided to change things up a bit this year.

"I asked people to bring copies of favorite recipes they inherited from family members. Even if they didn't cook and bring the actual dish, I requested a photo of the family chef whose recipe was being shared.

"Rather than featuring one speaker at the meeting, I thought we'd try to get more attendees by encouraging personal stories and participation. I'm just trying to come up with something a little different," says Suzy.

Response at the October 27, 2024, meeting was favorable. "Everyone agreed we should make this an annual event and do it on a Wednesday in October since those are the days members help at the library."

Member Elaine Boulay shared two family recipes for Tourtiere (French meat pies) she and Raymonde Montil made. Other FCHS members brought several delicious French desserts. Eventually, Suzy would like to publish a cookbook compiled of members' family recipes.

The original recipes, written by hand and illustrated by group members' ancestors, are available for SCGS members to try on their own and can be found on this site's FCHS's page. Let us know how the pies turn out!
