Wednesday, April 16, 6 to 7 p.m. PDT: Colin Whitney presents "Early California History: Its Records and the New California Pioneer Lineage Program." Colin will review Colonial California's history from San Diego's 1769 settlement to statehood in 1850. His presentation will cover Spanish/Mexican colonization, Mexican Independence, the missions, and land grants.
Mexican rule ended after the Mexican-American War. Massive immigration during the Gold Rush transformed California forever. These events generated copious genealogical records. We will examine which repositories contain them, highlighting the new California Pioneer Certificate Lineage Program, which includes over 500,000 pioneer records. Saturday, May 3, 10 to 11 a.m. PDT: Michelle L. Spencer will present "Build a Better Family Tree with Brick and Mortar Research." Have you researched a family business or your ancestor's occupation? Examining ancestors' "professional" lives is an overlooked but promising avenue for research. When we assess our ancestor's friends, neighbors, and acquaintances (cluster research), we often leave out the business side of life. Still, businesses leave records that may be available at local or state libraries or societies.
This lecture covers resources you may be familiar with but from a different perspective and introduces some new ones to add to your genealogical toolbox. Register now: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5602764255070800991
Wednesday, May 21, 6 to 7 p.m. PDT: Sara Cochran presents "A Deed in the Hand is Worth Two in the Books." Land records can be genealogical goldmines, even if your ancestor wasn't the deed holder. We start with an overview of how land is transferred from the government to private hands and between individuals. Then, consider the power of land records to answer genealogical questions and look at tips for finding and using these records.
